Gynecology Dr. Rydland has been in practice since 1984. She limited her practice to Gynecology in 1990. She limited her practice to office only after the birth of her triplets in 1994. Dr. Rydland is interested in treating the whole woman. She does annual examinations, sports physicals, evaluation and treatment of abnormal pap smears or bleeding, treatment of PMS, depression, many medical problems (ask!). She is also interested in cosmetic lasers and skin care. See those sections.
Cosmetic Laser - hair removal and spider veins Dr. Rydland has been working with lasers since 1990. She started office cosmetic laser in 2001. She started with laser hair removal, then upgraded her laser to do small veins. Laser consults are free. We offer packages to help reduce your total cost or you can pay by the treatment.
Skin rejuvenation - peels and home care products Dr. Rydland did her training in skin rejuvenation treatments in 2003. We offer home skin care products that are significantly stronger than anything you can purchase at your local pharmacy or department store. We can treat acne, wrinkles, brown spots, thick skin areas (heels, elbows etc), dry skin and many other problems. We are all using the products at the office, and are amazed at the results. Skin care consults are FREE. We offer packages on rejuenating peels, and discounts on home care products with peel packages. We recently added a treatment called nuskin to help tighten many areas of the body in addition to the chemical peels.
Medically supervised diet and weight loss We all have problems with our weight. We offer medically supervised weightloss programs. We can also help you with diabetic diets, hypoglycemia problems, potassium problems, constipation problems, calcium or iron intake problems and many others.
SPA TREATMENTS AND PRODUCTS Other treatments that are now available include massage chair therapy, wax dips for hands or feet and chemical peels. Products include potpourri, comfort packs, Glytone skin care products, kidsWellness (herbal treatments for many common problems), and nuskin treatments for skin tightening.
Colposcopy
Procedure Description: Colposcopy (evaluation of abnormal pap smear)
What To Expect: This procedure is to evaluate any abnormal findings on Pap smear. You will have a pelvic examination. A microscope is used to examine your cervix. Vinegar (Acetic Acid) is placed on the cervix. Dr. Rydland will explain any abnormal changes that she sees. A biopsy is usually necessary. The doctor uses a topical (not injected) numbing medication before taking the biopsy. If a biopsy is taken, a strong iron solution (Monsel's) is usually placed in the biopsy site to stop any bleeding.
Preprocedure: You will be offered medication to help with any discomfort. You may take Motrin or Advil, or prescription medication. If you take the prescription medication, you will need someone to drive you to and from the office. In any case, you may bring someone with you. This person is welcome to stay with you during the whole procedure.
Postprocedure: You may have some light cramps. Motrin or Aleve will help with this. You may have some light bleeding or discharge of the medication used to stop bleeding. This lasts only a few days. You should plan to take the rest of the day off. Discuss other activity with the Doctor at the time of your appointment.
Laser Hair Removal
Procedure Description: Laser Hair Removal
What To Expect: Laser hair removal can be done on almost any area of the body. The procedure is virtually painless. In order to maximize the hair removal process, we use a topical novicaine gel (NO INJECTIONS). This sits for 20 minutes. We use ice packs to chill the skin. The procedure time varies depending on the area treated from as little as 5 minutes for your lip to 1 hour for each whole leg.
Preprocedure: Do not pluck or wax for 3-4 weeks if possible. You may shave or use a depilitory. Please shave the area to be treated before the treatment. Do not wear make-up if your face is to be treated (or wash it off in the office)
Postprocedure: Your skin may be red for a few minutes. This is from the ice packs and will fade as the skin warms up. The skin may feel like a sunburn. We recommend aloe gel or other sunburn treatments for any minimal discomfort. It will be more sensative for a while. Please use sunscreen to prevent damage to your skin.
Skin Biopsy
Procedure Description: Evaluation of those "lumps and bumps"
What To Expect: Dr. Rydland will look at the area. Some dark spots can be treated with laser or bleaching cream. Some spots can be treated with freezing or chemicals. If the area needs to be removed, we first apply a topical novicaine to numb the area. This is an odorless jelly that numbs the top of the area. If the area is deeper than can be completely numbed topically, she will next freeze the area with a spray. Then she injects novicaine under the skin. This does sting a bit. We say it's the biggest bee sting you ever got. It only lasts a short time, then the area is numb. When it is numb, the area is cleaned with an antiseptic solution. The area will be removed, and stitches used if necessary to close the area. We will send any tissue removed to pathology to make sure it is not cancer.
Preprocedure: No unusual preparation is necessary. If you are scheduled for a biopsy, you may wish to take a double dose of ibuprofen or naproxen before the procedure.
Postprocedure: If necessary, you will be given a prescription of pain medication.
If you have had laser, freezing or chemical treatment, you will not have any dressing. Activity will be discussed, but usually there is no limitation.
If you have stitches, you may also have a dressing placed over them. You need to keep this area clean and dry. You will be given instructions about activities that you should and shouldn't do depending on the location of the biopsied area. We will need to see you back for suture removal. This is a "no charge" visit, included in the price of the biopsy. We will call you with the pathology results when available, and discuss them again when you come for suture removal.
Annual Examination
Procedure Description: Yearly or Annual Examination and Pap
What To Expect: New patients will be asked to fill out a health questionnaire and other information. Please bring your insurance cards. The receptionist will go over your information and answer any questions you may have. The nurse will take you into her office and answer any other questions. She will measure your blood pressure and weight. She may ask you questions about your health history. You will be taken to an examination room. Dr. Rydland will discuss your health with you before and after the examination. After you have met with the doctor, you will be given a gown and sheet. Dr. Rydland will do a complete examination with breast exam and pelvic exam and pap smear.
Preprocedure: The best time to have your pap is in the middle of the cycle. If you are having any bleeding, we may not be able to do the pap smear. If you are having abnormal bleeding, come in anyway for evaluation, and we will reschedule the pap if necessary. Please bring a list of medications that you are currently taking and any other information we may need. If you are under 18, please let the receptionist know.
Postprocedure: There is occasionally spotting from the pap smear. This should not last more than 24 hours. Any problems you have should be addressed. You may be given literature about a particular problem. We will schedule a mammogram for you if necessary. Any consultations will be arranged for you. Any lab results will be phoned to you. If you prefer, they can be e-mailed. This can be arranged throught this site, since this is a secure connection.
Laser of Spider Veins
Procedure Description: Laser Treatment of Spider Veins
What To Expect: You will probably feel some pops as the veins are treated. We use a topical novicaine and ice packs if possible, but the laser energy needed to treat veins is quite high.
Preprocedure: You should clean the area to be treated. Please do not wear make-up on the treated area on the day of treatment. Let us know if you bruise easily. You may want to bring a pressure garment (socks or stockings for legs etc.) to wear afterwards. We will wrap your legs after vein therapy.
Postprocedure: You may have some discomfort for a short time. Local treatments and over the counter pain medications should be sufficient. There may be some bruising. Some veins may not be completely closed on the first treatment, but you should see a significant improvement each time. You need to wear a pressure garment or wrap the veins for 2 days and avoid strenuous activity during this time to help them heal.
GLYTONE Glycolic (Chemical) Peel
Procedure Description: Chemical Peels to reverse some of the signs of age
What To Expect: GLYTONE Glycolic Peels are the application of a solution containing glycolic acids to a selected area to help remove the dead skin cells and stimulate collagen and elastin fibers. This is a process that takes several treatments.
First, you will be asked to wash your face with Glytone Mild Gel Wash. Pat your face dry. Then we use Glytone Wipe Away Cleanser to remove any oils remaining on the skin. Next, the Peel product will be applied to your face for a predetermined amount of time. This is a gel applied with a soft pad. You may feel a slight stinging or tingling for several minutes. If the sensation is extremely uncomfortable, the peel can be stopped early. At the end of the assigned time, your face will be sprayed with Glytone Post Peel Neutralizer. This stops the action of the peel. You will be asked to rinse your face and pat (not rub) it dry. We will spray your face with a refreshing Thermal Spring Water to complete the process.
Preprocedure: Avoid excess sun for one week. No Accutane for 6 months before. NO EXCEPTIONS! Stop Retin-A 3 days before treatment. You should not have a treatment if you have an active cold sore. If you are prone to cold sores, discuss this with the doctor before you start your peels. Preventative medicine may be prescribed. Do not shave the day you have your peel. Peels can be done on other parts of the body besides the face. This will help with thin and wrinkled skin anywhere. Ask your consultant.
Postprocedure: GLYTONE Glycolic Peels remove the dead skin from your face. Your face may be a bit more sensitive after the peel. Wait 12 hours to apply make-up. Do not use moisturizer after the peel. This will cause the peel not to work as well. Shower steam is good for the face. Your skin may flake or peel lightly. It is not unusual to experience a slight stinging, tingling sensation or mild redness for several minutes. You may expect some mild burning, itching, dryness, tightness or mild irritation. Avoid excess sun for 1 week after a peel. Remember to use sunscreen! If you are on an "aggressive" peel schedule, you may have some stinging and irritation for several days following a peel and visible peeling over the next several days. Scheduling: The more time between peels, the less visible peeling you will see. Peels are usually at least two weeks apart. We recommend a series of 6 peels. We increase the strength of the peel each time. Maintenance is every 6 to 9 months with a series of about 3 peels. Glyt

We make every effort to answer all your questions. We also try to make your visit as "painless" as possible. If you are having a procedure, we have many methods of making things as comfortable as possible for you. For our patients who have medical doctors, we offer gynecologic services, treatment of spider veins and laser hair removal. All GYN care is coordinated with your medical doctor if possible. If you do not have a medical doctor, some general medical problems can be treated in our office. If you have a problem that our doctor doesn't feel comfortable treating, we will offer referrals, and even make appointments for you. We do believe in preventative care, and encourage annual pap smears, mammograms as indicated by your age, and flu shots. We also offer screening blood work.

Paraffin Wax Dip
Paraffin Wax Heat Therapy Bath - Soothing, fast acting heat releives minor aches and pains. Since 1962, physicians, physical therapists, and arthritis specialists have recommended Paraffin Wax therapy because it is one of the most effective methods of applying heat to relieve pain. This fast-acting heat therapy penetrates skin to soothe pain and stiffness. Effective on: Arthritis, Inflammation, Joint Stiffness, Muscle Spasms, Sports Injuries, and Dry, Cracked Skin. How does paraffin heat therapy work? Paraffin wax has a very high "heat capacity," meaning it is able to absorb and retain a great amount of heat. Comfort Packs are now available in our office. They are locally made in a variety of fabrics and sizes. Containing flax seed and natural lavender, they can be used hot or cold. By heating in the microwave, you can release the soothing lavender fragrance and have a portable source of heat therapy. You can also keep them in the freezer for portable cold therapy. They stay warm for a half hour or more.

What is HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)?
What is HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)?
HPV is short for Human Papilloma Virus. This is the wart virus. There are many different types of warts. Some cause warts on hands or feet. Some cause warts on the outside of the genital area called Condyloma Accuminata. Some cause changes on the cervix that show up on pap smears.
How do you get the virus?
The most common way to get the virus is from sexual contact. It does live outside the body for a period of time, so you can get it from tanning beds, sex toys, towels and even sharing underwear. Condoms do not prevent you from getting the virus, but cut down on the transmission.
How can I reduce my risk of getting the virus?
Never have sex(!!!!!) Do not share any objects or clothing.
Does having the virus mean my partner cheated?
NO! The virus can be present without any spots or signs. You can also have the virus for a long time before you see changes on your pap smear. (years)
Once I get the virus will I always have the virus?
Your immune system may very well fight off the virus. We think there are virus particles in a low level that may persist. If your immune system is damaged (for example with AIDS) the virus may cause changes again.
What about a vaccine?
The vaccine is coming. It will probably be indicated for young teenagers first to prevent infection.

We are very excited to add GLYTONE skin care products to our services. Beginning in July of 2003, we are the only local supplier of these products.
GLYTONE includes a number of products for all skin types and problems. Skin Care Kits for Oily, Normal, Dry and Sensitive skin are available. The Acne Care Kit contains all the basics for caring for your complexion if you are bothered by acne.
Products can be purchased in kits or individually.
GLYTONE skin care line contains glycolic acid. This is an alpha hydrolic acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane. The products exfoliate (remove dead skin) and stimulate collagen and elastin in the underlying tissues.
We are all using the products at the office. Call and ask how we like them.
I would like to spotlight a few products that meet needs that many of us did not know how to solve.
1. Heel and Elbow Cream - this product helps with those cracked and bleeding heels, rough elbows and skin on other areas of the body that is very thick. No more scraping or filing. Put some cream on the area and watch it heal in a short period of time.
2. Keratosis Pilaris Kit - KP is a common skin condition. Do you have those little red or white bumps mostly on your arms? They can be anywhere on the body. They usually don't get infected but may have a small white core. The KP kit contains a system for dealing with this. While not a cure, it keeps the condition under control. Dr. Rydland and her boys are all using the product and are very impressed.
3. Bleaching Cream - This will help with those brown AGE SPOTS, Melasma (mask of pregnancy) and other pigmented areas.
4. Serious shave cream - apply instead of shaving cream. Helps to avoid the red bumps that sometimes come after shaving.

Acne Treatments
We have several treatments to help with acne problems.
Glytone has just come out with a new peel containing Salicylic Acid, which really helps with acne. Come in and give it a try.
Glytone has an Acne Care Kit. It contains products to exfoliate (remove the superficial dead skin cells) and clear the areas around the pores. It also has the strongest Benzoyl Peroxide available without a prescription. This combination of treatments clears and tightens pores and keeps them from getting blocked and then infected.
Glycolic Peels contain a stronger version of the glycolic acid than is in the in-home products. Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid ("AHA") made from sugar cane. It removes the superficial skin cells, tightens and softens the skin, and keeps the pores from getting blocked.
Our doctor also can prescribe medications as necessary to treat acne "from the inside".
